The estate final return — also called a terminal T1 return — is the last personal income tax return filed for a deceased individual. It covers income earned from January 1 of the year of death up to the date of death. The executor of the estate is responsible for filing this return with CRA by April 30 of the following year (or 6 months after the date of death, whichever is later).
Yes. CRA allows up to three optional returns that can reduce the overall tax burden of the estate: the Rights or Things Return, the Return for a Partner or Proprietor, and the Return for Income from a Graduated Rate Estate. Our Mississauga accountants assess which optional returns apply and file them to minimize taxes owed by the estate.
A clearance certificate from CRA confirms that all taxes owed by the deceased and the estate have been paid. Without it, an executor who distributes estate assets to beneficiaries can be held personally liable for any outstanding tax debt. We assist executors in applying for the clearance certificate once all CRA returns have been assessed.
The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the estate. Simple estates with no investments or business interests may be resolved within 6–12 months. More complex estates with multiple properties, business interests, or trusts may take 1–3 years. We work efficiently to resolve estate taxes and obtain clearance certificates as quickly as possible.
